The Gallery was established in 1861 and is located next door to the South Australian Museum on North Terrace.
Except for visiting exhibitions (entry fee payable) you won’t find the work of any classical masters here. What you will find, from its stock of 38,000 works, is an excellent collection of Australian, European, North American and Asian works including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, furniture, ceramics, metalwork and jewellery thoughtfully displayed in a beautiful 1900 classical Greek porticoed building.
The Gallery is deservedly noted for its Aboriginal works – quality pieces as opposed to quantity.
In addition to external visiting exhibitions the gallery also runs its own (free entry) special short-term exhibitions – two were running when I visited. 
The guy in pink – see photo alongside – was from Teeth of the rice plant, a touching exhibition of Chinese and Indonesian political art. See the website below for exhibitions on when you want to visit.
While I didn’t eat there, the Gallery has a fairly impressive looking restaurant/ café including seats in an external courtyard.
Allow about an hour and a half.
