This walk is one of three summit walks, the shortest one, located between the ‘town centres’ of Woden and Tuggeranong which I had discounted for over 20 years as offering little of interest to walkers, other than locals seeking exercise for themselves and or their dogs. I hadn’t expected much in the way of scenery. As it happens, I was wrong in relation to all three walks.

Urambi Hills Summit Walk
For many Mt Painter in the northern suburbs of Canberra is the ‘go to’ walk for scenic views of the northern part of the city, with minimal effort. While some consider Mt Arawang to be the Mt Painter of the south, for me the Urambi Hills summit walk earns this accolade though it is a little longer at 2.1 kms return. Either way, both walks offer sweeping views of the southern part of the city and out across the Murrumbidgee river towards the Brindabella mountains to the west.

The Honyong-Cotter Track, Cotter Reserve
Having completed the Mt McDonald Summit walk by just after 11am my plan was an early lunch break by the Cotter River, down by the Dam, and then to do the slightly longer Bullen Track walk to the Cotter Caves which, due to vandalism, I had heard were no longer open to the public, but thinking that the walk would still be worthwhile.

Mt McDonald and the Cotter Catchment Lookout Walk
On a recent walk into the former Sherwood Homestead I had views of Mt McDonald in the distance – one such view depicted below. This reminded me that while I had walked part-way up the mountain, to the Cotter Catchment Lookout, I had not yet visited the top. To-day’s early spring walk would put that right and I would make a slight deviation on the return to re-visit the dam/catchment lookout. As it turned out, this was one of the best walks with the best views for the effort required that I have done in a while – highly recommended.

Sherwood Homestead (Former) Walk via Mountain Creek Road (Plus)
There are three official walking tracks to the former Sherwood Homestead, about 35 kilometres drive from Canberra. I have written separate reviews on the other two – from Blue Range Hut (the most popular approach) and from East-West Road (the easiest). This review covers the walk from Mountain Creek Road but as I could not resist the temptation to take in two peaks in the vicinity of the former homestead the 8.4 kilometres official walk increased to 11 kilometres and became somewhat more difficult, on the huffing and puffing scale.

Sherwood Homestead (Former) Walk Via East-West Road
There are three official walking tracks that end up at the very little that remains of the former Sherwood Homestead, about 45 kilometres from Canberra. The walks vary between 6.8 kms (this one) and 8.4 kms return. I have written a seperate reviews on the walk in from Mountain Creek Road and the walk in from the Blue Range Hut which, in itself, is of historical significance to the Canberra region and is now home to a camping site, making it the most popular starting point to get to Sherwood Homestead.

Giorgio’s Sandwash Track – Woodstock Nature Reserve
While enjoying the amazing views down onto the Murrumbidgee River and the surrounding countryside from Shepherd’s Lookout I noticed a formed track running along the northern back of the river, terminating at an almost 90 degree bend in the river. Sherwood Homestead (Former) Walk Via Blue Range Hut
Generally when people do this walk they do it in either spring or autumn. This lets them enjoy either the display of daffodils still growing on the site of the long abandoned Sherwood Homestead or the sight of a range of exotic deciduous trees as their leaves transform from green to an assortment of browns, yellows and reds before finally drifting to the ground in the former homestead gardens.

Notwithstanding the title of this review a primary focus of this walk is the Murrumbidgee River, just before it leaves the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) on its long path to Balranald where it joins with the Murray River.
