The Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) is a research institution in Chinese Studies at the Australian National University. Its broader aim is to enhance the understanding of China which it describes as “’Greater China’ or the ‘Chinese Commonwealth’ (the People’s Republic of China, the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions, as well as Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora).”

From a public perspective (which of course includes visitors to Canberra) CIW aims to enhance the understanding of China through open lectures/seminars, exhibitions and film evenings. All lectures are delivered in English. Exhibition material is presented in Chinese and English and films are subtitled in English, where necessary.

Its output is on a very modest scale with clearly a limited audience.

I visited a very interesting exhibition here – The Other Shore – by photographer Wei Leng Tay (based in Singapore and Hong Kong). This small exhibition focused on the well entrenched ideas of many Hong Kongers regarding ‘Mainlanders’, at a time when growing numbers of mainland Chinese are moving to Hong Kong. It considered the issue from the perspective of both Hong Kongers and ‘Mainlanders’.
