Gundagai Historic Museum

Step back in time with a visit to the Gundagai Historical Museum. This place is a real treasure trove packed (10,000 items, so they claim) with old machinery, photographs, clothing, household items,etc, all depicting life in the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries – a time of pioneers, gold prospectors and bushrangers.

Among its more notable exhibits are a T-model Ford, Phar Lap’s (a very famous Australian racehorse) saddlecloth, an assayer’s bowl used by Herbert Hoover who was a mine engineer here in Gundagai prior to ascending to the US Presidency and the two medallions presented to Yarri and Jacky Jacky, the Wiradjuri men whose efforts saved many lives during the Great Flood of 1852.

This is one of the best small town museums in Australia and real connoisseurs of Australiana could spend a day in here rummaging through the displays. For the average visitor an hour will suffice.

I was very impressed by the knowledgeable volunteers who run this museum – very clearly a labour of love.
