50On the outskirts of Flåm, while making my way towards Old Flåm to visit its church I came across these stones, one erect with the others lying flat, slightly raised, in a circle around it. What were they?

On further investigation I realised I had come across the remains of an old iron age (ca. 500 BC – ca. 400 AD) cemetery – something that I had certainly not anticipated finding here. The standing stone was in its correct position while the other seven (head?)stones, long since fallen over, had been converted into seats or picnic tables and set around what was now a small park area.

It is thought that the now lying stones and around ten others formed a stone circle in the ancient cemetery. The establishment of stone circles was a characteristic custom in southern Scandinavia and other parts of Northern Europe at this time with many, though not all, marking burial sites. These stone circles are unrelated to the much earlier bronze age stone circles like Stonehenge in Britain.
