My love for trains does not extend to ‘petit’ trains like this.

That said, they are everywhere nowadays and provide a useful option for getting around if you are incapacitated, with kids or just feel like being lazy, and who doesn’t from time to time? Unless one or more of these afflictions apply, Flåm is extremely easy to get around on foot.

Flåm has its own ‘petit’ train, tucked away at the end of the main jetty close to the Railway Museum. Like everything else in Flåm it is only minutes from anywhere else.

I found it difficult to decipher the route taken by the train and I think that was because it changes depending on demand. When a large cruise ship hits the village (as around 150 do each year) the route seems to shorten. One thing for sure is that the price of the trip does not come down.

This is a bit of a scam perhaps (or perhaps a good example of the market economy working well!), so before you pay enquire as to the route and ensure you are happy with what you will be getting. I read somewhere that the train goes out to Old Flåm and along the Aurlandfjord towards Aurland – these may be special trips. I certainly did not sight it anywhere near Old Flåm in the three or so hours I spent walking there and back. On my second day when there were actually two large cruise ships in town it appeared to be operating an extremely short route.

I honestly can’t recall the price for the trip but do recall thinking it was very expensive.

Tickets for the petit train are bought at the kiosk located right beside the trains departure point.

  1. I’ve used these things a couple of times, for instance in Lviv with VT friends when we’d walked most of the day and were flagging and also wanted to get out of the rain. But I agree they aren’t usually good value for money, though they’re invaluable for those who couldn’t manage to see the sights on foot
