Regular readers of my entries will be aware that I am a big fan of heritage/historical walks around towns and villages. They often give a more realistic feel for a place and its history than visiting the main tourist attractions. If you have time the Heritage Walk in Semaphore is worthy the hour or so it takes. The full walk is certainly not a must do and a visit to the items upon which I have prepared individual entries will give you a good feel for the place (most of them are on the walk anyway).

Do note that there is no tourist office in Semaphore and the walk brochure/ map needs to be picked up from the Port Adelaide Tourist office. If you can’t make it to Port Adelaide, shame though that would be, my final picture provides a rough sketch map of the walk and details of the numbered items can be seen at http://semaphoresa.com.au/history/. There is also an audio track on the same site and guided tours are available.

The attached pictures may whet your appetite for the walk:

Picture 1 (above) – Former 1881 Fire Station turned residence

5

Picture 2 – Former 1899 Congregational Hall /Church turned residence

Picture 3 – Masonic Hall. Note the masonic symbols on the building and the asymmetrical layout of the façade. The Semaphore Lodge was founded in 1884 and this Lodge building opened in 1911

Picture 4 – Odeon Star Cinema – Not only of historic interest – this privately run cinema returned to full operation in the 1990s having closed in 1976. It now offers mainstream movies in historic surroundings for a very reasonable $8 entrance fee. Check here for current offerings and latest admission price.

If you choose to arrive in Semaphore by train, and I recommend you do, alight at Granville Station and cover the walk as you make your way to the beach (the order you see things on this walk is irrelevant).

  1. I like them too! 🙂 🙂 I don’t know if you saw it but there was a heritage trail in the walks I shared on Monday, actually only about 40 minutes away from us, at North Shields. We drove up there to try it for ourselves and had a great day out. Unfortunately, it’s a bit further to yours. 🙂 Merry Christmas!
