After three days at beautiful Swan Reach, it was time to move on. The next planned stop was Tailem Bend, about 100 km south of Swan Reach. Rather than going there directly, we decided to make a slight detour and spend another night at Murray Bridge.

If you read the first part of this review you will know that I paid Mannum a very quick visit as a stop on the Mid Murray Eco Drive. Our original plan was the spend a couple of days in Mannum but given inclement weather forecasts, which didn’t actually eventuate, we cut a longer stay in Mannum from this trip. As such, this is a very brief entry based on a short stroll along part of the foreshore and part of the town’s main street and I will write more when I get a chance to visit the town again.

Today, we had planned to laze around at the campsite and enjoy the winter sunshine that we had been experiencing recently. However, our plans were interrupted by a gloomy morning and a forecast that promised no sunshine for the entire day. As a result, we had to quickly change our plans.

Today was another day mainly spent relaxing by the river, in the glorious winter sun. This was after a less than glorious frost last night, though, wrapped up well and using the diesel heater we really only became aware of the cold when we woke up and stepped outside the van before the sun had done its thing.
In addition to sitting back and relaxing, we did manage to go for a drive and had a look around town, the name of which is derived from the black swans that live in this area on the Murray River.

On completion of our short visit to Murray Bridge and having enjoyed walking along the river it was time to move on to Swan Reach hoping that we would snag a prime camping site right by the river.

The city of Murray Bridge is situated on the lower reaches of the Murray River – the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and the Nile. It is about 80 kms from the South Australian state capital of Adelaide. Surprise, surprise its name derives from a bridge built across the River Murray in 1879. The city is a typical rural hub surrounded by a major agricultural area focusing on the dairy industry, chicken raising, pig breeding and vegetable growing. From a tourist perspective the main attractions are paddle steamer trips along the river and a visit to the nearby Monarto Safari Park.

This morning, we decided to go for a walk in Kinchina Conservation Park, less than five kilometres from the centre of Murray Bridge. The park map shows a plethora of marked walks covering both the northern and southern sections of the 414-hectare park. Instead of following any these walks, we decided to explore the park more extensively with a concocted route that covered about 70% of the marked walks in terms of distance, including both the northern and southern sections of the park.

This is the second part of an entry on my visit to Monarto Safari Park. If you have not read Part 1 I suggest you do so HERE, prior to continuing.

Yes, Dear Reader, I am still rambling around in Australia and have not jetted of to Africa for a safari.
Today (and yes, it took a full day) we visited the Monarto Safari Park, about fifteen kilometres from where we were staying in Murray Bridge, South Australia. Dedicated to African and indigenous Australian animals (with a few species from other locations) the park covers some 1,500 hectares with about a fifth of that accessible to the public. It is billed as the world’s largest safari park outside of Africa giving the animals loads of space to move around.

After a three month break, half of which was spent visiting family and friends in Northern Ireland and holidaying in Japan (a firm favourite), we are back on the road again rambling around Australia in our caravan. This time some winter-time travel, inland in South Australia and Victoria focusing on the Murray River with some time in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Essentially a return trip from Adelaide to Canberra in the slow lane, covering around 5000 kms in an anticipated time period of just less than three months.
