Obsidian Hotel – The Island’s Best!

19

As of Oct 2017 the Obsidian (and its related accommodation options) has closed due to the termination of flights to the UK making it nonviable to remain open. Very sad. This may change as/if accessibility to the island improves. I have retained my review as originally written.

I will only be writing one hotel review for Ascension Island as there is only one hotel on the island. Be advised that you must have accommodation arranged prior to arriving in Ascension. Continue reading “Obsidian Hotel – The Island’s Best!”

Ascension Island – Arriving by Cruise Ship

9

If you are want to be sure that you will get to Ascension Island (or St Helena) and have more than a few hours visit you will have to arrive by the RAF flight from the UK (suspended indefinitely in May 2017) or by the RMS St Helena from Cape Town via Jamestown, St Helena. See separate reviews for these options.

An alternative way of getting to the Ascension or St Helena is to join a cruise which stops at either or both these islands. Continue reading “Ascension Island – Arriving by Cruise Ship”

Getting to Ascension Island By Air

11

Effective April 2017 it is no longer possible for civilians to fly into or out of Ascension Island.  The Airbus A330 Voyager aircraft now used on the route between RAF Brize Norton, Ascension Island and the Falkland Islands is too heavy to land at Ascension Island. Accordingly tourist access is now only possible by sea on the RMS St Helena. I retain this review, originally written in 2013, as a personal record and in the hope that it might be of some historical interest to my reader. Getting to Ascension Island by Sea

Excluding being a passenger on a cruise ship (see separate review – Arriving on a Cruise Liner) or yacht there are two ways of getting to or from Ascension Island – air or by sea. What makes life easy (if not cheap!) is that there is only one option for each – different and interesting though they are. Effective April 2017 it is no longer possible for civilians to fly into or out of Ascension Island.  Continue reading “Getting to Ascension Island by Sea”

Ascension Island – A Dot In The Atlantic

1

Ascension Island is a tiny dot (88 square kilometres) in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, some seven degrees south of the equator. It is one of the most remote inhabited places on the planet. Do visit it – you won’t regret it.

(Oct 17 update – sadly the termination of flights to/from the UK and the closure of the Island’s only hotel have made a private visit to the island pretty difficult to arrange  – hopefully a solution to transport problems will eventuate in the neat future).
