Weetangera Cemetery

151

Those who have read more than a handful of my reviews will be aware of my predilection for visiting old cemeteries. This is not out of any sense of morbid curiosity but rather because of their value in getting to know a local area and its social history, in particular. Continue reading “Weetangera Cemetery” →

The Pinnacle Nature Trail

146

A few weeks earlier I visited The Pinnacle Nature Reserve and while it started out rather disappointing I recorded in my review of that walk how the disappointment turned to pleasure when I went for a wander in the south-eastern part of the reserve, having visited the, oddly named, Pinnacle itself. The Pinnacle – Disappointment Turns to Pleasure

141

Having just walked up Mt Painter and soaked up the stunning views there-from I decided to walk up to The Pinnacle in the nearby Pinnacle Nature Reserve which I had heard offered equally good views. Continue reading “The Pinnacle – Disappointment Turns to Pleasure” →

Mt Painter Walk– Short and Sweet

136

Canberra, Australia’s bush capital, is very blessed when it comes to beautiful ‘rural walks within the city’. Of all these walks the short walk to the top of Mt Painter has, for my money, the best ‘views to effort ratio’. Continue reading “Mt Painter Walk– Short and Sweet” →

Hall Market

133

The Hall Market is held on the showgrounds in Hall village, approximately 10 kms from the centre of Canberra. Markets are open 10am to 3pm on the first Sunday of each month, excluding January. Continue reading “Hall Market” →

Cockington Green – Visit the World in a Day

128

I have to admit being a little sceptical about this one. I didn’t actually visit it till I was over ten years in Canberra. Why was I sceptical? Well, I expected it to be a poorly maintained, worn out, overpriced and over hyped mixture of things that I wouldn’t be able to recognise. Yarralumla Play Station

123

Despite a revamp and the addition of two mini golf courses Yarralumla Play Station continues to exude the rather run-down, or dare I say it country/outback town fun park, feel that it has had for years. I hasten to add that this is a complement! Continue reading “Yarralumla Play Station” →

SIEV X Memorial

117

It is purely coincidental that I originally wrote this review on election day (2016) here in Australia as it was at the height of the 2001 Federal election campaign that a 19.5 metres long by 4 metres wide leaky coastal fishing boat carrying 421 people sank en route to Christmas Island, Australia from Indonesia. Weston Park – Kangaroos in the City

107

Located on the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, this is one of my favourite parks in Canberra, if not my favourite. Most of the time I just enjoy the 40 hectare park as I cycle through it while riding around lake though sometimes I will specifically go here for a walk, more so now that dogs (on leashes) are permitted. Chong Co – Kingston Foreshore: “Chong Co Thai”

106

I greatly enjoy Thai food but hadn’t had any in a little while. The fact that I had a gift voucher for the Chong Co dictated my choice of restaurant on this occasion. They actually have four branches in Canberra so we choose the one at the, still relatively new and hip, Kingston Foreshores. Continue reading “Chong Co – Kingston Foreshore: “Chong Co Thai”” →
