Today’s plan was to explore the northern part of Gunbower Island, immediately to the south of the small town of Koondrook, via a couple of walks and then have a look around the border towns of Koondrook and Barham. As mentioned in my previous entry, we were advised that our intended walks were off limits as the Gunbower Creek had flooded in early 2023 and the walking tracks were still, in late July, under water. Notwithstanding this, we made our way to the point where I had planned on starting the walks in anticipation that a some part of the tracks might be open.

Between Kerang and Lake Boga (about 40 kilometres north of Kerang) lie over fifty lakes of varying size, some with water, some dry. Collectively the lakes are referred to as The Kerang Lakes and today we visited a small number of the more accessible and thus more popular of these lakes.

The city of Murray Bridge is situated on the lower reaches of the Murray River – the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and the Nile. It is about 80 kms from the South Australian state capital of Adelaide. Surprise, surprise its name derives from a bridge built across the River Murray in 1879. The city is a typical rural hub surrounded by a major agricultural area focusing on the dairy industry, chicken raising, pig breeding and vegetable growing. From a tourist perspective the main attractions are paddle steamer trips along the river and a visit to the nearby Monarto Safari Park.

Now the rather grand entrance arch for a municipal car park, this majestic structure was formally the bridge-keeper’s gantry on the 1875-1966 version of the Jevois Bridge, a bridge which bridged the swampy estuary between Port Adelaide and Semaphore on the Lefevre Peninsula – the point where overseas mail was by then being discharged. Harbour Bridge – Pylon Climb

There are two options in terms of climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge – either a climb up the south-east Pylon, the one closest to Circular Quay, or the main bridge climb by which you can get to the top of the arch. I have not done the main bridge climb, nor do I intend to, for reasons outlined on my Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb review. You can also find more details on the Bridge and its history in my main Sydney Harbour Bridge review. Continue reading “Harbour Bridge – Pylon Climb”
Sydney Harbour Bridge – Climb

When I wrote my main review on the Sydney Harbour Bridge I deliberately focused on the history of the bridge and admiring it from anywhere other than its upper heights. I did not want a negative commentary on climbing (to the top) to detract the visitor from enjoying what is one of Sydney’s top sites. Accordingly, I have decided to write here separately on the bridge climb. Continue reading “Sydney Harbour Bridge – Climb”
Sydney Harbour Bridge

In addition to its beautiful natural harbour, Sydney boasts two instantly recognisable man made structures, the Sydney Opera House and the rather unimaginatively named Sydney Harbour Bridge – sometimes referred to as the ‘coat hanger.’ Continue reading “Sydney Harbour Bridge”
Bridge Across the Yalu

There are only two official, operating bridge crossing points on the 795 km Yalu River border between North Korea and China, one, the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge (formerly the Yalu River Bridge) here in Sinuiju and the other, the Ji’an Yalu River Border Railway Bridge between Ji’an in China and Manp’o in North Korea.
