I had not planned on visiting the University of Sydney but one Sunday morning I was having a look around Victoria Park before heading into the suburb of Glebe to do a bit of exploring when I noticed the clock tower of the university from the park and decided to go up and have a quick look at the building. The National Carillon, located on Aspen Island, Lake Burley Griffin, was a gift from the British Government to the people of Australia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the national capital, Canberra. Like all the surrounding buildings in Town Hall Square (Ratslaukums), the city’s 17th century neo-classical Town Hall was destroyed in World War II. The current very aesthetically agreeable Town Hall, built in 2003, is an amazingly true copy of the original (picture 2), right down to detail such as the coat of arms and statue of Themis – Greek goddess of divine law and order.
