Like everyone else, I had hoped that after our tiring though eventful ten hour bus trip from Pyongyang to Hamhung we would call it a day and head for our hotel. That was not to be. Mother Kim Jong-suk – Starting a Trend in Cross Border Travel to China?
Our final stop in Hoeryong, specifically related to the memory of Kim Jong-suk, was the banks of the Tumen River which, here, serves as the country’s northern border with China. Sino-Korean Friendship Tower

This monument, close the Kim Il-sung Stadium and the Pyongyang Television Tower serves two purposes.

Welcome Home Kim Il-sung

On 14 October 1945 over 100,000 people gathered here, beside the present day Kim Il-Sung Stadium and the Arch of Triumph, to celebrate the liberation of Korea, by the Russian army, from the evil clutches of Japan which had occupied the country for 35 years.
Liberation Tower

This is one of Pyongyang’s older modern age monuments having being built in 1947 (refurbished 1985). It stands at a height of 30 metres on Moran Hill close to the large bronze statues of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il (Mansudae Grand Monument) – the location from which I saw it.
