Canberra has four main sources of water and consequentially four dams. Three of these the Cotter, Bendora and Corin Dams are on the Cotter River, itself little more than a mountain stream, which flows through the western part of Namadgi National Park. Gibraltar Falls, one of the highest in the Australian Capital Territory, is a 50m high set of cascading falls in the northern part of Namadgi National Park, best combined with a visit to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve rather than other parts of Namadgi, due to logistics of getting there. If you walk the 9kms long Settlers Track in Namadgi National Park, which I strongly encourage you to do, you will encounter three old, restored dwellings along the way – Brayshaw’s Hut, Waterhole Hut and Westerman’s Homestead. Tharwa is a small village located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in the Australia Capital Territory and lies a few kilometres to the south of Canberra, Australia’s capital city and home to The Rambling Wombat! It is typically just passed through, by visitors, en route to Namadgi National Park or Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (if you choose to come this way to the latter).
