Semaphore Jetty was built in 1860 and was originally 652 metres long but is now only 585 metres. That is still a substantial walk out to the end and back in and affords you excellent views along a fantastic white sand beach (pictures below looking north and south) and back to the shore with its low lying dunes and pine trees. Regular readers of my entries will be aware that I am a big fan of heritage/historical walks around towns and villages. They often give a more realistic feel for a place and its history than visiting the main tourist attractions. If you have time the Heritage Walk in Semaphore is worthy the hour or so it takes. The full walk is certainly not a must do and a visit to the items upon which I have prepared individual entries will give you a good feel for the place (most of them are on the walk anyway). Brekkefossen, while certainly not the biggest waterfall in the region, is visible from most parts of the Flåm valley (and from the Flåm Railway) and is the most accessible waterfall from Flåm being less than two kilometres away. Continue reading “Brekkefossen – Close But Hard To See”
While Flåm Church (Flåm kyrkje), in the old village centre, is visible from the Flåm Railway it is well worth the very easy 3.5kms walk, lovely in itself, out from Flåm to see it. The old brown wooden church and graveyard are beautiful in themselves but absolutely stunning as they are, set nestled by the Flåm river with their beautiful mountain backdrop. Sit on the bench in the graveyard and just look around. You will quickly appreciate how the village originally got its name. Flåm literally means “little place between steep mountains”. The majority of visitors to Flåm do little more than take a trip on the famous Flåm Railway and a boat-trip on the fjords. While these are must dos, I strongly recommend that you stay at least overnight and add a walk or two to your itinerary. Continue reading “Go For a Walk in Flåm”
In another review I alluded to the fact that the area around Henley Beach and Grange was formerly highly prized farming land by virtue of the existence of rich alluvial soils. The large expanse of alluvial soil was due to the fact that the Torrens River, until 1934, stopped short of discharging into the sea, being stopped by the bank of sand dunes which runs along this part of the coast. Like all other lakes in Canberra , Lake Tuggeranong is an artificial lake. It was constructed in 1987 coinciding with urban development in the area. The foreshore of the lake is parkland, with swimming, fishing, wind-surfing and non-motorised boating all permitted. A shared bicycle/walking path surrounds the lake, running for 6.7 kilometres. Having visited the base of Cotter Dam I developed the urge to get up on top and see the catchment area and reservoir. Should you, Dear Reader, get a similar urge I recommend this short (2.8km return), and relatively easy walk, which starts just off the Brindabella Rd, about 2.5 kms from the Cotter Reserve.
