Today we moved on from Sea Lake to the larger rural town of Kerang (population just shy of 4,000) which we will use as a base to explore the Kerang Lakes, tomorrow. Today our primary focus was the mundane activity of shopping to stock up on provisions – there being a Woolworths supermarket in town. While in town we also had a quick look around and a stroll along the Loddon River.

This morning we left South Australia and crossed the state border into Victoria. Rather than the colourful state borders signs I have encountered elsewhere in Australia, at this crossing the ‘welcome’ was a serious of signs warning us that speed cameras were in operation though-out Victoria. Well, I guess we can’t later say we were not forewarned should we transgress.

This walk is one of three summit walks, the shortest one, located between the ‘town centres’ of Woden and Tuggeranong which I had discounted for over 20 years as offering little of interest to walkers, other than locals seeking exercise for themselves and or their dogs. I hadn’t expected much in the way of scenery. As it happens, I was wrong in relation to all three walks.

For many Mt Painter in the northern suburbs of Canberra is the ‘go to’ walk for scenic views of the northern part of the city, with minimal effort. While some consider Mt Arawang to be the Mt Painter of the south, for me the Urambi Hills summit walk earns this accolade though it is a little longer at 2.1 kms return. Either way, both walks offer sweeping views of the southern part of the city and out across the Murrumbidgee river towards the Brindabella mountains to the west.

At around 1.5 kilometres (or just over two kilometres if take a short side trip for a look at the Queanbeyan River and the lower reaches of the Googong Reservoir as I did) the walk around Tin Hut Dam is one of the shortest and easiest walks in the Googong Foreshore reserve. While there is no defined path along the western side of the dam, rather you walk through open reserve close to the bank of the dam, you cannot get lost.

It is amazing to think that millions of years ago, around 420 million to be more precise, the London Bridge, Googong area was part of the ocean floor. As the ocean receded the arch, which would become known as the London Bridge Arch, slowly formed by water leaching through the fossiliferous limestone, enlarging cracks, until a passage big enough to let the Burra Creek through was created. The arch reached its present form about 20,000 years ago.

There are three official walking tracks to the former Sherwood Homestead, about 35 kilometres drive from Canberra. I have written separate reviews on the other two – from Blue Range Hut (the most popular approach) and from East-West Road (the easiest). This review covers the walk from Mountain Creek Road but as I could not resist the temptation to take in two peaks in the vicinity of the former homestead the 8.4 kilometres official walk increased to 11 kilometres and became somewhat more difficult, on the huffing and puffing scale.

While enjoying the amazing views down onto the Murrumbidgee River and the surrounding countryside from Shepherd’s Lookout I noticed a formed track running along the northern back of the river, terminating at an almost 90 degree bend in the river. A quick check confirmed that this was an official walking track – Giorgio’s Sandwash Track. Continue reading “Giorgio’s Sandwash Track – Woodstock Nature Reserve”

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve was established in 1971 and affords Canberra residents and tourists alike a fantastic opportunity to explore and enjoy the native flora and fauna of a beautiful natural valley, framed by granite topped hills, just a short drive from Canberra. Letterbox Walks

History
The earliest use of the term “letterbox” on Ascension Island dates back to 1673 when Father Navorette reported after a visit that there was a “cache or letterbox” where passing ships left messages for those going in the opposite direction. Continue reading “Letterbox Walks”
