After enjoying the Winter Blues Festival for a few hours yesterday afternoon we spent the next couple of days wandering around the border towns of Echuca (Victoria) and Moama (New South Wales). This morning, we started off with Moama and its monthly market. Given that the Winter Blues Festival was still in full swing it came as no surprise that the market was particularly busy when we visited.

Yesterday I called into the tourist information office in C0huna only to find out that my planned drive for today – the Gunbower Island Forest Drive – was closed as the track was flooded in various places. Following some discussion with the very helpful lady in the tourist office we opted for a shorter drive less deep into the forest area, to the north of the regular drive and along roads which were, by this stage, officially open. In normal drier times there would be no water anywhere near the roads we took today at this time of year. As it was, we would still be driving along the edge of the wetlands which had come out to meet us as opposed to us having to drive further into the 26,400 hectare flood plain to encounter the wetlands!

Having visited Wynarka and Karoonda we continued on to our overnighter at Pinnaroo. In caravanning a stop is typically referred to as an overnighter when you pull up late evening and set-up without detaching the van from the car, eat, sleep and do whatever else you might do of an evening and then leave first thing the following morning. Typically no sightseeing is scheduled in.

Today, we took a short drive down the western side of the Murray River from Tailem Bend to Wellington, via the small hamlet of Jervois, returning to Tailem Bend along the eastern side of the river.

This morning, we decided to go for a walk in Kinchina Conservation Park, less than five kilometres from the centre of Murray Bridge. The park map shows a plethora of marked walks covering both the northern and southern sections of the 414-hectare park. Instead of following any these walks, we decided to explore the park more extensively with a concocted route that covered about 70% of the marked walks in terms of distance, including both the northern and southern sections of the park.

In another review I alluded to the fact that the area around Henley Beach and Grange was formerly highly prized farming land by virtue of the existence of rich alluvial soils. The large expanse of alluvial soil was due to the fact that the Torrens River, until 1934, stopped short of discharging into the sea, being stopped by the bank of sand dunes which runs along this part of the coast. Unable to escape, the river regularly flooded leading to fertile soil in the area. Continue reading “Breakout Creek Wetlands – Nice Detour From Coast”
The Sanctuary Loop – Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

This is an easy 2.1km wetlands walk (a half loop can be completed) which according to the guide takes 1.5hrs. It can be done in much less than this though do spend a bit of time to enjoy the walk and the sights along the way. You could spend a few hours here. The walk (apart from a couple of very short side detours) is fully sealed, has a number of seats, and is wheel chair accessible. It is a great (must-do) introduction the the Reserve.
