Egg of the Universe bills itself as ‘Sydney’s only integrated Yoga Studio and Wholefoods café’ and its website focuses on the yoga aspect of the business.

As I didn’t come here to exercise a muscle, other than those in my mouth, I won’t comment on the yoga aspect of the business, except to say I did see various people entering and leaving with mats, presumably to part-take of, or having part-taken of, the yoga.

We picked this café primarily because it was close to where we were staying – a few minutes walk from the Darling Street Apartments in the suburb of Rozelle.

On entering, the café looked very small appearing more like a takeaway with a couple of tables. Moving on into the café we soon saw that it opened out into a largish partially covered garden courtyard, to the rear of the building, with tables and chairs tastefully arranged around and under a large shady tree. The cafe was quite busy and had a nice vibe.

The clientele (mainly local, I suspect) exuded a feeling of new ageness (if that’s a word) and health – though not hippy (they wouldn’t be able to afford to eat here – even though its not excessively expensive).

The menu very much focused on health foods with green juices and smoothies, free range eggs, soups, lentils, seeds, salads, slow-cooked stews and the likes prominently featured.

Looking around and reading the menu made me feel part of the healthy, hip and in crowd though I may not have looked it to others!

In terms of food, according to the website:

‘Our menu is ruled by taste, led by the seasons, governed by instinct, influenced by nutritional science and nurtured by traditional wisdom’

I had a Super B.L.A.T.

For the reader not familiar with this (and to be honest with you, I wasn’t) it’s ‘Nitrate Free Bacon, Roast Tomatoes & Seasoned Avocado with Herbs, Green Leaves, EOTU Lacto-Fermented Sauerkraut & Spelt Sourdough with Aioli DF’. For another dollar I could have had a gluten free option but instead I went for an organic poached egg for an extra $3. How could all that not be good for you!!

My partner opted for smoked ocean trout and sprouted buckwheat.

While I wasn’t completely familiar with the all the ingredients as listed on the menu, my meal was delicious while that of my partner was good.

Naturally, for a place like this, our coffee and tea was organic and met all sorts of ethical standards. The coffee tasted ok but nothing special. While we didn’t consume any cakes or dessert, those on display in the cabinet at the front of the café certainly looked appetising.

The staff where helpful and the service was good, even if some of their faces were a bit on the sour side.

All in all, a good healthy meal at a reasonable, though not cheap, price and I would certainly return for breakfast or lunch if staying in or visiting the area again.
