Before you ask there is no Theatre 1 or 2 in Canberra.

Theatre 3 is a small (read cosy) theatre with a capacity of less than 200, situated in the grounds of the Australian National University.

The theatre is home to the Canberra Repertory Society, an amateur dramatic society with professional directors, which puts on some pretty good shows. They do six productions per year. While not of the calibre of the West End or Broadway, the shows provide for a good nights entertainment at a reasonable cost. Canberra Rep, as it is known, was founded in 1932 making it one of the oldest theatre companies in Australia.

As there are only 8 rows of seats you needn’t worry what row you are in though seats in the centre of the rows afford better views than those on the ends. The seats are of acceptable quality with decent enough leg room. Wheelchairs can be accommodated but you need to contact the theatre directly, and in advance, should you require this facility as they need to move seats.

The theatre has a small bar which is incredibly well priced as theatre bars go and should the weather be sufficiently clement you can enjoy your drink in a very pleasant courtyard in front of the theatre.

Most recently I attended a production of Oscar Wilde’s, The Importance of Being Earnest, one of my favourite plays. While the two leading male actors could have been better the remainder of the cast was excellent and the production was very well directed. A most enjoyable evening.

Seats can be booked online, by phone or in person.

Check the website for details of what’s on and how to book it.

  1. I think you have read my post about seeing “The Importance of Being Earnest” in Paris. It’s still a very funny play, even after repeated viewings.
